Are You Ready?

Don’t let fear stop you.

We’ve been on 2019 for less than ten days, and odds are you’re more than sick of seeing overly optimistic people sharing their amazing resolutions on Instagram, and as sick of overly self-depreciating people saying next year they’ll try again at making it their year because they’ve already messed up this one.

So much banter about new beginnings, even if it’s just to say they’re a myth because time’s a construct, blah, blah, blah.

Truth is, yeah, these things really get on my nerves too.

However, I do believe in the power of setting goals, so here I am with New Year’s resolutions myself.

Actually, I only have one goal for this year. Just one.

This year I want to be less fearful.

I truly believe fear is at the root of many of my problems. Well… of most people’s problems.

Think about it. Many of us are chronic scaredy-cats.

We all seem so grown up, so far away from our childhood days when we were so scared by the dark. But, truth is, we’re not.

Maybe darkness can no longer get to us, but our bravest days, the days when we would simply ask the new kid at the park to be our friend, are long gone.

Now we fear being laughed at at family gatherings, we fear embarrassing ourselves in front of potential lovers, and we fear nobody will like us for who we are and what we do. We fear we’ll fail, no matter what.

This is actually a very self-centered way of seeing life, because nobody thinks about you that much, I’m sorry to tell you.

We’re so convinced everyone’s watching every step we take, when in reality everyone’s making sure they themselves don’t trip, as to not make a fool of themselves.

We’re so scared of everything that we don’t even try.

We avoid making mistakes at all costs, and so we turn down our dream career fearing we’ll become a loser, we move on on our crush fearing we’ll be rejected, and we ignore our opportunity to live the life we want, because “that wouldn’t work out”. And the result of this is that, on the long run, we become dissatisfied with our lives.

Of course there’s always the possibility that you could fail, but aren’t you already failing if you deny yourself the opportunity to even try?

Allow yourself to fail, and you may succeed instead.

A lot of the times, when you find obstacles that keep you away from what you desire, it’s just that you don’t feel worthy of what you want, so you convince yourself there’s no way you can achieve it.

How many times have you found yourself thinking “if only I had money, if only I had time, if only I was prettier, if only, if only, if only…”?

Yeah, maybe another scenario would make it easier for you to achieve your goals, but you can try to make your dreams a reality with what you have now.

Just try. Try several times if you need to.

Maybe it won’t work out.

Or maybe it will.

The only obstacle on your way may just be your fear.

Are you ready?
